I can seriously see Pinterest becoming an absolute juggernaut for shopping and rivalling sites like Amazon. With them, it's like your consciously going shopping but with Pinterest you're getting ideas which could lead to a purchase, but it's first focus is to inspire, and that's a much more enticing reason to visit them instead.

Pinterest has taken one step closer to rivalling massive retailers such as Amazon with it’s new Shopping Cart.

There’s been so many positive improvements happening with Pinterest recently that we can’t keep up! The latest update is insanely clever – a shopping cart!

Advantage Pinterest

It makes perfect sense too with the introduction of Buyable Pins last year (enabling users to make purchases within the app). Now you can add multiple products to your cart and checkout right within the app.

It’s not just coming to mobile either, it’s also coming to the web version of Pinterest along with Buyable Pins. Previously Buyable Pins were limited to just the mobile app.

We already know 93% of people say they use Pinterest to plan for purchases (and 87% of users on Pinterest buy something because they’ve seen on Pinterest), so this massively increases the chances of conversion right within the app. I know that I would make so many more purchases from Pinterest if there was a shopping cart.

This move also makes the platform so much more appealing over Facebook and Twitter platforms, where purchasing isn’t the main focus. Expect to see these giants integrate some form of store or shopping experience in the near future!

What it means going forward

I sense as well with promoted pins expanding out that businesses will be able to track conversions and optimise their campaigns for purchases within the app.

There’s no news yet (that we can find) about expanding buyable pins past platforms that currently support it (i.e. Shopify). We’re just waiting for it to hit the mainstream (like wordpress sites) then more accounts will be able to take advantage of these new features.
